Digital security cameras transmit electronic information more than high bandwidth radio frequencies. The major disadvantage is the price from the system. This perhaps offset by the several benefits. Advantages of a electronic system are as follows: Long range transmission of signal with no degradation - can go 450 feet with line of sight in between digital camera and receiver Extremely higher quality audio and video signals Can have two-way communication between camera and operator Higher security of the sign. Wi-fi IP Safety Cameras Wi-fi IP cameras are now obtainable that will connect through a local area network over IEEE 802.11b/g WiFi methods. These include 2-way audio feeds, encryption, pan, tilt control and automatic night vision. These kinds of cameras have replaced the older digital wireless cameras, because of prevalence of Wi-Fi networks.

1.As far as "does not mesh with existing wireless network," it's likely just running on an RF system, which is much cheaper to produce and run (think electric bills) than 802.11-type networks.

2. Do you really think your neighbor's going to respond well to the call "my house is on fire. Can you grab a photo album and my daughter's favorite stuffed animal" kind of phone call?

3. Almost all home automation systems are following the newest standard these days, which ensures inoperability.

How about an alarm clock? The aroma of fresh brewed coffee gradually released before your alarm goes off..... then the smell of the ocean (along with audio of crashing waves) as you fall asleep.

Aside from just smelling nice, the scents may establish a Pavlovian stimulus-response relationship that literally makes waking up/falling asleep easier.

I'd buy one.
